Jimmy Meaney is an Irish sculptor
from Kilkenny, who has a great passion for wood.
He has survived a brain tumour and as a young man lost his right
arm in a motorbike accident. Although Jimmy still suffers severe
bouts of pain through the lose of his upper limb, it has not
stopped him in his relatively new career as a wood sculptor.
After the brain tumour five years ago, he took up sculpture
for therapeutic reasons and In the short time since he began
to sculpt wood, he has experienced great public and critical
acclaim.
Jimmy will be the first to point out that no trees are cut down
to provide him with the raw materials for his pieces, and that
"I only use recycled wood and bog oak".
He has a strong interest in the 'inner qualities' of the material,
with a highly developed perception of the sensibility needed
to extract the most exciting formal result from that medium.
" I like to think that I am bringing the wood back to life
through my work", says Jimmy.
